Marine engines are some of the most restricted engines a tuner will ever read. Jet skis leave the factory speed-limited, outboards carry conservative rev limits, and modern marine diesels add EGR, DPF and the emission strategies we already know from trucks. On the water, an engine runs close to full load most of the time, so a marine file has to be calibrated for that. This guide covers what we supply for personal watercraft, petrol outboards and sterndrives and marine diesel, which ECUs we work on, real figures from our catalogue and how to order.
Key facts at a glance
- Jet skis and petrol engines: Stage 1, Stage 2 on selected platforms, RPM limit increase, Vmax (speed limiter), DTC off.
- Marine diesel: Stage 1, EGR and DPF solutions where the engine has them, DTC off.
- Brands: Sea-Doo, Yamaha WaveRunner, Kawasaki Jet Ski; Mercury, Yamaha and Suzuki outboards; MerCruiser, Volvo Penta, Yanmar, Cummins, Volkswagen Marine, FPT, MAN, Caterpillar.

What we supply
| Solution | What it does | Typical engines |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 1 | Fuel, ignition or injection, boost and torque limits optimised on a stock engine. | Jet skis, outboards, sterndrives, marine diesel |
| Stage 2 | Calibration for hardware changes such as intake, exhaust or a supercharger upgrade. | Selected platforms, on request |
| RPM limit increase | Rev limiter raised within the safe range of the engine, for example to match a new propeller or impeller. | Jet skis, petrol outboards |
| Vmax | Top speed limiter removed or raised. | Jet skis |
| DTC off | Single fault codes switched off cleanly. | All platforms |
| EGR / DPF | EGR and particulate filter solutions on diesel engines that have them. | Newer marine diesel |
Jet skis: Sea-Doo, Yamaha, Kawasaki
Personal watercraft are factory-limited to roughly 65–67 mph (105–108 km/h), whatever the engine can deliver. Supercharged models in particular have a lot left in the calibration. Typical jobs are Stage 1 + Vmax, or Stage 1 + RPM limit after an impeller change.
| Model | ECU (where confirmed) | Stage 1 |
|---|---|---|
| Kawasaki Ultra 310X / 310LX / 310R | — | 310 → 340 hp |
| Sea-Doo RXP-X (1.6 supercharged) | by model year: MSE3.7, ME17.8.5, MG1CA920 | 300 → 330 hp |
| Sea-Doo GTX (1.6 supercharged) | Continental MSE3.7, later Bosch | 300 → 325 hp |

Sea-Doo uses three controllers: Bosch ME17.8.5 (RXT-X, RXP-X, GTI, Spark, Wake), Continental MSE3.7 on earlier 4-TEC models (GTI, RXT-X, GTX, RXP-X) and the newer Bosch MG1CA920. Which one is in which model is explained in our Sea-Doo ECU tuning guide. Yamaha WaveRunner SHO and SVHO engines run Mitsubishi ECUs. Kawasaki Ultra and STX models are covered in the Kawasaki Jet Ski catalogue.
Outboards and sterndrives
Petrol outboards and sterndrives respond well to fuel and ignition work, and the rev limiter often has to follow a propeller change. For example, we have mapped the rev limiter on the Yamaha F200 with its Mitsubishi ECU.
| Engine | ECU (where confirmed) | Stage 1 |
|---|---|---|
| Mercury Verado 600 | — | 600 → 700 hp, 775 → 925 Nm |
| MerCruiser 430 | Motorola PCM / ECM | 430 → 500 hp, 555 → 660 Nm |
| Mercury Verado 400 / 400R | — | 400 → 450 hp, 520 → 630 Nm |
| Yamaha F350 5.3 V8 | — | 350 → 380 hp |

| Suzuki DF300 V6 | Mitsubishi 33920 | 300 → 330 hp |
| Yamaha VF250 V MAX SHO | — | 250 → 280 hp |
Mercury and MerCruiser ECUs are mostly Motorola PCM / ECM units (PCM0701/0702, ECM070x, ECM555), with Bosch EDC16 on the diesel sterndrives such as the QSD 4.2 (350 → 420 hp). Suzuki outboards use Mitsubishi 33920-series ECUs.
Marine diesel: Volvo Penta, Cummins, Yanmar and more
Marine diesels share their electronics with trucks and industrial engines. Volvo Penta D11 and D13 use the same TRW EMS2 and Bosch EDC7 families as Volvo trucks, and Cummins QSB / QSC / QSM use Cummins controllers. That means our Volvo TRW and Cummins know-how applies directly, including EGR and DPF work on newer engines.
| Engine | Stage 1 power | Stage 1 torque |
|---|---|---|
| Volvo Penta D13 (incl. IPS) | 1000 → 1160 hp | 3390 → 3970 Nm |
| Volvo Penta D11 | 725 → 855 hp | 2460 → 2840 Nm |
| Cummins QSM 11 | 710 → 815 hp | 2405 → 2740 Nm |
| Cummins QSC 8.3 | 597 → 700 hp | 2025 → 2400 Nm |

Why a marine file is different
- Constant load. A car sees full load for seconds; a boat cruises for hours at 70–90 % load. A marine Stage 1 keeps exhaust temperature and boost within limits for continuous duty, not just for a short pull.
- The propeller sets the load curve. More power changes where the engine settles at wide-open throttle. If the hull and prop allow more rpm, the rev limiter has to follow, which is why RPM limit is a frequent marine option.
- Cooling and corrosion. Raw-water cooled engines and tired heat exchangers have less margin. We recommend a cooling check before any power increase.
- Jet skis are speed-limited, not power-limited. On supercharged PWC, the Vmax option often makes the biggest difference on the water.

Frequently asked questions
Can you remove the speed limiter on a Sea-Doo, Yamaha or Kawasaki jet ski?
Yes. The Vmax option removes or raises the factory top speed limit and can be combined with Stage 1.
How much power does Stage 1 add on a jet ski?
On supercharged 1.5–1.8 litre engines, typically 15–30 hp, for example 300 → 330 hp on a Sea-Doo RXP-X or 310 → 340 hp on a Kawasaki Ultra 310.
Why would I raise the RPM limit on an outboard?
After a propeller or impeller change, or with more power, the engine may reach the factory limiter too early. Raising it within the safe range lets the engine reach its proper wide-open-throttle rpm.
Do you do EGR and DPF solutions on marine diesels?
Yes, on engines that have them, using the same strategies as on trucks and industrial engines from the same families.
Is a marine Stage 1 safe for continuous load?
That is what it is calibrated for: exhaust temperature and boost stay within limits for long periods at high load. We still recommend checking the cooling system and the propeller match.
Which outboards do you support?
Mercury and Verado, MerCruiser sterndrives, Yamaha four-stroke and V MAX SHO, Suzuki DF and others. Check the boats catalogue or send the read.
Can the engine go back to stock?
Yes. Keep the original read: it can be written back at any time, for example before a warranty visit or a sale.
