MAF disable: running a diesel without the air mass sensor

The MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor measures how much air enters the engine. Diesel ECUs use it for EGR control, smoke limitation and diagnostics. A dirty or failing MAF gives unstable readings: the engine loses power, smokes or falls into limp mode, and a new genuine sensor is not always the answer.

Implausible readings — P0100–P0104 and manufacturer-specific air mass codes.
Power loss because the smoke limiter cuts fuel on wrong air values.
Interaction with EGR — once EGR is removed, the MAF signal is often no longer needed.
