EVAP / secondary air off: evaporative emission and air pump monitoring in petrol ECUs

Petrol engines use two small systems that often cause warning lights: EVAP (the evaporative emission system — charcoal canister, purge valve, leak check) and secondary air injection (an electric pump that blows air into the exhaust during cold start). Both age badly, and both are often removed during engine swaps, race builds or when parts are no longer available.

EVAP leak codes (P0440–P0456) caused by a cracked hose, a worn cap or a failed leak detection pump.
Purge valve faults affecting idle and mixture.
Secondary air pump failure — P0410–P0418, pump or valve seized by condensation.
