EGR / AGR off: software solution for a blocked or failing exhaust gas recirculation system

The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation, AGR in German) valve sends part of the exhaust gas back into the intake to lower combustion temperature and NOx. In daily use it is one of the most common sources of trouble on modern diesels: soot and oil vapour build up in the valve, the cooler and the intake manifold, the valve sticks, and the engine goes into limp mode.

Typical problems

Carbon build-up in the valve, cooler and intake ports — loss of power, black smoke, rough idle.
Stuck valve or failed position sensor — P0400–P0409 and manufacturer-specific EGR codes, limp mode.
Leaking EGR cooler — coolant loss and, in the worst case, engine damage.
Throttle and boost interaction — EGR control also drives the intake throttle; when it misbehaves, boost and smoke maps go wrong too.
