The second-generation Denso ECU on Volvo's Drive-E (VEA) engines was closed for a long time. It is built on an NXP SPC5777M microcontroller, and for years nobody could read or write it. That has changed: Autotuner now supports reading and writing the Denso VEA Gen2, and we have developed the full set of solutions for it. AdBlue, DPF, EGR and swirl flaps OFF, plus Stage 1 on the diesels; OPF / GPF OFF, full decat, Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the petrol engines. This guide shows which Volvo models are covered, what each solution does and one important rule for AdBlue OFF on these cars.
Key facts at a glance
- ECU: Denso VEA Gen2, NXP SPC5777M, on Volvo Drive-E 2.0 four-cylinder diesel and petrol engines.
- Tool: read and write now supported by Autotuner: on the bench first, then also through OBD once the ECU has been unlocked on the bench.
- Models: XC90 II, XC60 II, XC40, V90 II, S90 II, V60 I / II, S60 II, V40 II: 51 engine versions in our price list, from the D2 120 hp to the T8 Twin Engine 407 hp.
- Diesel (D2, D3, D4, D5): AdBlue OFF or AdBlue reduction, DPF OFF, EGR OFF, swirl flaps OFF, Stage 1.
- Petrol (T2 to T8): OPF / GPF OFF with full decat, full decat / second lambda OFF, EGR OFF, Stage 1, Stage 1+ / Stage 2.
- All engines: Vmax (speed limiter), DTC off, checksum correction and back-to-original.
- Important: the AdBlue control module (ACM) cannot be read by any tool yet. AdBlue OFF is done in the engine ECU, and the dashboard must be free of AdBlue messages before the file is written.
What the Denso VEA Gen2 is
Volvo's Drive-E engines, the VEA family of 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesels and petrols, are controlled by Denso ECUs. The first generation runs on a Renesas SH72546 and has been tunable for years. The second generation moved to a much more powerful NXP SPC5777M microcontroller with stronger protection, and it stayed closed until tool support arrived. Both generations can be found within the same model ranges, so always check the ECU before quoting a job. The software ID and the controller type are shown by the tool when you identify the ECU.
Gen1 or Gen2? Our price list has both: "Denso VEA SH72546" for the first generation and "Denso VEA Gen2 SPC5777M" for the second. Pick the matching entry in the file service. If in doubt, send the read and we will tell you which one it is.

Diesel solutions (D2, D3, D4, D5)
| Solution | What you need to know |
|---|---|
| AdBlue / SCR OFF | Done in the engine ECU. The ACM cannot be read yet, so follow the rule below: no AdBlue messages on the dash before writing, then unplug the ACM. AdBlue consumption reduction is available at the same price, just say so in the order. |
| DPF / FAP OFF | Proven, tested solution with the soot counter stopped. |
| EGR OFF | The EGR valve plug must stay connected. If the electrical part of the valve is faulty, also block the EGR with a metal gasket. |
| Swirl flaps OFF | Swirl flap control and its diagnostics switched off. |
| Stage 1 | Torque, boost and injection optimised for the stock engine. Figures for every engine are in our tuning catalogue. |
| Vmax / DTC off | Speed limiter modification and selective fault code removal. |
Petrol solutions (T2 to T8)
| Solution | What you need to know |
|---|---|
| OPF / GPF OFF | Includes full decat. Disconnect the OPF pressure sensor after writing the file. |
| Full decat / second lambda OFF | Catalyst monitoring and the rear lambda sensor switched off. |
| EGR OFF | Available on the petrol engines as well. |
| Stage 1 | On the stock engine, including the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid. |
| Stage 1+ / Stage 2 | For cars with hardware upgrades such as intake and exhaust. |
| Vmax / DTC off | Speed limiter modification and selective fault code removal. |
On every Gen2 file you can also order checksum correction (only if your tool does not correct it automatically) and a back-to-original service.
AdBlue OFF on Gen2: the rule you must follow

On these Volvos, AdBlue dosing is handled by a separate AdBlue control module (ACM), not by the engine ECU. At the time of writing, no tool can read that module. Our solution therefore removes AdBlue from the engine ECU side, and that only works if the car is in the right state when the file is written:
- The dashboard must be clear. No AdBlue warnings and, above all, no "remaining distance" or engine-start countdown caused by an AdBlue fault. If such a message is active, reset it first and make sure all AdBlue messages are gone.
- Write the AdBlue OFF file to the engine ECU.
- Disconnect the plug of the AdBlue control module (ACM).
- Check: ignition on, engine running, no AdBlue warnings and no countdown.
Why the order matters. If the countdown or an AdBlue message is still active when the modified file is written, the warnings will not go away, even with a correct file. Clear the messages first, then write the file, then unplug the ACM.
The AdBlue control module (ACM)

The module in the photo is the Continental SCR-EAA ACM (Volvo part number 32242878, Continental A3C0179960100). It manages AdBlue dosing, heating and level monitoring. At the time of publication this module cannot be read by any tool on the market, which is why AdBlue OFF on Gen2 is done from the engine ECU and the ACM is unplugged.
When tool support for the ACM arrives, we recommend reading it too and attaching the ACM read to the order together with the engine ECU read. With both files, the AdBlue system can be switched off more completely on both control units, just as we already do on Volvo trucks, Mercedes MCM/ACM and Cummins.

Frequently asked questions
Which tool reads the Volvo Denso VEA Gen2?
Autotuner now supports reading and writing the Denso VEA Gen2 (SPC5777M). The first connection is made on the bench to unlock the ECU; after that, the car can also be read and written through OBD. Send us that read with the order.
How do I know whether my Volvo has Gen1 or Gen2?
The tool shows the ECU type when you identify it: SH72546 is Gen1, SPC5777M is Gen2. Both appear in the same model ranges, so always check. If in doubt, send the read.
Can the AdBlue module (ACM) be read?
Not at the time of writing. AdBlue OFF is done in the engine ECU and the ACM is unplugged. When the ACM becomes readable, we recommend attaching its read to the order as well.
Why do the AdBlue warnings stay after writing the file?
Almost always because an AdBlue message or a remaining-distance countdown was active when the file was written. Clear all AdBlue messages first, then write the file, then unplug the ACM.
Do you offer AdBlue reduction instead of full OFF?
Yes, at the same price as AdBlue OFF. Mention it in the order description.
Does EGR OFF need the valve to stay connected?
Yes. Keep the EGR plug connected. If the valve's electrical part is faulty, also block the EGR with a metal gasket.
Is Stage 1 available on the T8 Twin Engine?
Yes. For example, the XC60 T8 Twin Engine goes from 407 to 445 hp and from 640 to 730 Nm.
Can the car go back to stock?
Yes. Keep the original read; we also offer a back-to-original service.
