Motorcycle ECU tuning — what is changed in this software
A motorcycle leaves the factory with much of its potential locked away: torque limiters, rev and speed limiters and region-specific emission calibrations hold back power and response. We change the original software of this ECU by hand — fueling maps (air mass, lambda correction, part- and full-throttle maps), ignition maps with their baseline and correction factors, torque limiters, and the throttle: electronic throttle and secondary intake flap settings and the WOT limiter, for a sharper response to the twist of the wrist.
Depending on the model, the same file can also carry rev limiter and Vmax removal, shorter quickshifter up- and downshift dead-times, launch control, EXUP, second lambda and catalyst monitoring off, DTC off and idle speed. Stage 1 is calibrated for a standard bike; Stage 2 and 3 are matched to a race exhaust, cams and other hardware. On a stock engine the gain at the top is typically around 5–8 %, and the bigger difference is felt in the low and mid range.
